Samsung Electronics has appointed new leaders to its battery, display, and IT service subsidiaries, marking a significant shift in its management structure. This decision came just a day after the company opted not to replace its three vice chairmen, aiming to maintain stability during uncertain market conditions.
Choi Joo-sun, currently the CEO of Samsung Display, has been nominated to lead Samsung SDI, the company's battery division. At 61, Choi brings a wealth of experience from his previous roles in Samsung Electronics' semiconductor division, Micron Technology, and Hynix, which was acquired by SK Group. He holds a doctorate in electronic engineering from KAIST and a bachelor's degree from Seoul National University.
Following Choi's transition, Yi Chung, the Executive Vice President of Samsung Display, has been promoted to President and CEO. Yi, born in 1966, has a doctorate in chemical engineering from POSTECH and vast experience within Samsung's liquid crystal display division.
Additionally, Samsung SDS has nominated Lee June-hee, an Executive Vice President at Samsung Electronics, to succeed Hwang Sung-woo as the CEO of the IT service provider. Lee holds a doctorate in electrical and electronic engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a degree from Seoul National University.
These appointments are subject to approval at the upcoming shareholder meetings of each subsidiary.
In a related development, Samsung Global Research announced the establishment of a new management consulting office, appointing Choi Yoon-ho to lead this initiative. Choi has been a pivotal figure in the growth of the battery sector since becoming CEO of Samsung SDI in late 2021, despite challenging market conditions. The think tank emphasized that Choi's leadership will be instrumental in fostering sustainable growth across the group’s affiliates.
